In a significant step towards fostering sustainable agricultural practices and bolstering the local economy, the Department of Agriculture (DA) through the High Value Crops Development Program, National Urban and Peri Urban Agriculture, Bureau of plant industry, and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Silang signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) during the grand opening of the Sumilang Festival 2024 (April 24-26, 2024). The signing ceremony marked the commencement of a groundbreaking collaboration aimed at revolutionizing local agriculture under the banner of “Project SUMILANG: Sustainable Urban Modernization Through Innovative Local Agriculture and Niche Gardening.”

The event, graced by key government officials including Fidel L. Libao, OIC Regional Executive Director of DA-Region IV-A, Atty. Alston Kevin A. Anarna, Municipal Mayor of Silang, and other distinguished personalities, showcased the commitment of both the DA and the LGU Silang towards advancing agricultural development in the region.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) commits to enhancing farm productivity and income by providing essential support such as farm inputs, post-harvest facilities, and capacity-building activities, while also facilitating market linkage, product promotion, and business development services to ensure farmers have access to lucrative markets. Additionally, the DA will conduct training programs to equip farmers with the necessary skills for sustainable farming practices and carry out regular farm visits for monitoring progress and assessing the impact of interventions, thereby ensuring the success of the project.

The signing of the MOU heralds a new era of collaboration and innovation in Silang’s agricultural sector. By harnessing the expertise and resources of both government entities, Project SUMILANG aspires to create a model of sustainable urban modernization that not only enhances food security and farmer livelihoods but also promotes environmental stewardship and economic resilience.
