On February 4, 2025, the Department of Agriculture – High Value Crops Development Program (DA-HVCDP), in coordination with Barangay Libis, Quezon City, successfully distributed high-quality ginger seedlings to local urban farmers. This initiative is a key milestone in DA-HVCDP’s mission to strengthen local ginger production, ensuring food security and economic opportunities for urban communities.
The distributed ginger seedlings, developed through a research project in Region 2, are disease- and pest-free, promising higher yields and better-quality produce. This initiative underscores the importance of providing farmers with clean and improved planting materials to enhance agricultural productivity.
DA-HVCDP Director Manicad encouraged the farmers of Libis to become model farmers for this initiative, demonstrating the transformative impact of using high-quality seeds in urban farming. He emphasized that by strategically distributing premium planting materials, we can revitalize local agriculture, boost food security, and support economic growth.
Officials from the Quezon City LGU reaffirmed their commitment to urban agriculture, highlighting the importance of self-sufficiency in food production. They expressed their readiness to support more initiatives that will empower communities to utilize available spaces for farming and promote sustainable food systems.
Barangay Captain Niña De Jesus expressed gratitude to DA-HVCDP and the Quezon City LGU for their continuous support. She noted how this initiative not only helps residents grow their own food but also provides them with new livelihood opportunities while maximizing available land for productive use.
This collaboration between DA, LGU Quezon City, and urban farmers marks a step forward in strengthening urban agriculture. Together, we cultivate a future of food security, sustainability, and prosperity!
