The Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office No. 02 and Municipal Local Government Unit of Aritao today break ground for the construction of second onion cold storage in Aritao, Nueva Vizcaya.
The municipality, the major source of onion in Cagayan Valley, was a recipient of the first cold storage amounting to P20 Million.
Said facility was turned over last month which was intended for the Federation of Aritao Farmers Onion, Garlic, Ginger Growers Association comprising of 1,000 members.
The groundbreaking ceremony was undertaken just after the launching of the Aritao Agricultural Trading Post.
It will be erected beside the trading post in a lot owned by the municipal government inside the Agri-Growth Center at Barangay Banganan.
Amounting to P20 Million from the Department of Agriculture budget, it will operate with a capacity of 10,000 bags once completed.
“This will not only enhance onion production in Aritao but will inspire our farmers to produce more,” said Mayor Remelina Peros Galam.
“Thank you DA for this additional facility that will surely contribute to the economic prosperity of our constituents.”
The local chief executive said that the municipality needs more postharvest facilities such as cold storage due to rising interest of farmers in onion production.
The groundbreaking ceremony was attended by Congresswoman Luisa Lloren Cuaresma, Regional Executive Director Narciso A. Edillo, Board Member Edu Balgos, Vice Mayor Jayson Ferrer and Sangguniang Bayan Members, Ms. Carol Albay, Regional Coordinator, High Value Crops Development Program, Ms. Ma. Rosario Paccarangan, Chief, DA Agribusiness and Marketing Assistance Division and other regional and local officials.
